Britney Spears gives ‘Parenting Tips’ to little sister!

Now this really cracked me up!

Jamie Lynn Spears says older sister Britney gave her some parenting tips at her baby shower.The siblings were reunited at their parents’ home in Louisiana earlier this month for the party with family and friends.
‘It was wonderful to be able to spend time with her and just be girls again,’ Jamie admits. ‘We painted our nails and did stupid stuff, and we had our private time too. To be able to be in the privacy of our own home and just be sisters again was wonderful.’

Junoon Rocks Srinagar

For once, the enchanting valley of Kashmir rocked not with the sound of bullets, screams, and bombs but with the sound of music. Pakistan’s sufi rock band Junoon‘s much awaited performance at Dal Lake in the capital was greeted with a lot of excitement and energy.

Despite our previous speculations regarding the possible band members, Salman Ahmed did come all the way and performed his heart out to a large audience.

The concert was done in the shadow of intense security being provided by Indian Security Forces as there was an eminent threat of attacks by various Islamic militant groups who opposed the event. These groups have been actively targeting cinemas, liquor shops, video parlours and other sites deemed threatening to the Islamic culture.  

“It is great to see music healing wounds in Kashmir and propagating friendship between India and Pakistan,” said Mehnaz Ali, a 21-year-old female student.

“Gohar and Amrita? Hold on! I swear it was Farhan and Amrita just a month back!”

That is what my cousin had to say at a sleep over at my place while we shared the latest gossip. Honestly there is no end to this rumor and confusion!

Who is Amrita Rao with? Gohar, Farhan, both, or neither?

The Times of India published this article slating Gohar Mumtaz of the famous Pakistan pop band Jal to be the love struck bunny proclaiming him to be ‘the fan Amrita has found.’ Or is it more than that? A close friend of Amrita adds more to the massala by saying:

Well, Gohar does like Amrita and has admitted that he’s a huge fan, but Amrita was not even aware of his feelings for her.

Ahem Ahem! Are we to deduce that there actually was or is something bubbling under the surface? One sided crush or something on those lines maybe?

And what about poor Farhan and the feelings we all heard he had for the Indian model/actress? Farhan’s wikipedia page actually answers this as follows:

People are saying Farhan is currently dating Bollywood actress Amrita Rao But actually Amrita is dating with Gohar Mumtaaz, another member of Jal.

Now would our dearest Wikipedia lie to you?

The answer: MAYBE!

Because on the very same page is said that “that despite all rumours concerned with Amrita Rao and Jal guys Farhaan & Mumtaz, the real love of Amrita is Pratik Shah who is from Ahmedabad and he is a Computer Engineer.”

Confusion Confusion!!!

Side Note:

Irregardless of the controversy involving the three, Farhan and Gohar were recently spotted last weekend at Coffee, Tea, and Company (CTC) in Lahore having burgers at 1 in the morning. It’s good to see that there is no love lost between the two over the rumor. Keep up the good work guys!

Playing for Peace!

This weekend, the people of Indian Kashmir are in for a treat as they get to witness a live performance by one of Pakistan’s top sufi rock bands.

Dubbed as one of South Asia’s most popular acts, Junoon is scheduled to perform this Sunday in an auditorium on the banks of the picturesque Dal Lake in what promises to be a mega event in the valley after decades.

The concert is being held to promote peace and good in the region that has seen its fair share of blood shed and chaos for the past 60 odd years and is being organized by the South Asia Foundation (SAF)  

This venture could not have come at better time when both the countries have been victims of multiple bomb blasts and the recent tension that has been brewing up along the LOC.

I am not sure as to who exactly is included in the Junoon camp. The wikipedia states that currently “Junoon consisted of two other members: Ali Azmat on vocals and Nusrat Hussain on keyboards”. I guess that’s the line up then.

Shoaib Akhtar and controversies go hand in hand I swear. It’s like this man was born to be the centre of attention; for all the wrong reasons!

Pakistan’s daily, The Nation, posted a story a few days ago regarding airport customs officials finding empty syringes in his luggage while he was travelling to India to play in the Indian Premier League.

Shoaib’s personal doctor and trainer, Dr. Tauseef Razzak dismissed the claims as rubbish!

Talk about Shoaib telling the Customs officials that he needed the syringes to inject insulin as he is a diabetic patient is not true. He has asthma problems and uses an inhaler, for which he has got permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC) 

We don’t know if all this is true or just plain old ploy being sponsored by the disgruntled PCB when they got kicked in the face and had to allow Shoaib to play in the IPL. Or maybe it’s the newspaper merely ‘creating’ a sensational gossip because they didn’t have a ‘real’ story about the speedster to publish.

I say leave the guy alone. He’s doing well and entertaining the crowds out there. Give him breathing space and let him do what he does best.

Piracy in Pak down by 2 percent

Pak Tribune has reported that the piracy rates in Pakistan have dropped down by 2% and is now at a total of 84%. It is to be noted that for the past 2 years, Pakistan had been cruising on 86%. 

According to the Fifth Annual Global Software Piracy Study, released by Business Software Alliance (BSA), the piracy related losses have gone down to $125 million in Pakistan against $143 million in 2006.

Pakistan currently ranks No.13 among the top 25 countries with highest piracy rates as opposed to its standing at No. 7 from last last year, followed by Armenia (93%), Bangladesh (92%), Azerbaijan (92%),Moldova (92%), Zimbabwe (91%), Sri Lanka (90%), Yemen (89%),Libya (88%), Venezuela (87%), Vietnam (85%), Iraq (85%), and Indonesia (84%)

Food for thought: India is not in this list! Think about it!

Upcoming Superhero flicks

Hi folks! The Iron Man is in cinemas now all across Pakistan and if you have not seen it as yet you are missing out on an action packed adventure! Better book your seats as soon as possible for this one!

Further to that, there are several superhero movies lined up for release soon.

Upcoming reboots of the Hulk and The Punisher franchises include The Incredible Hulk and Punisher: War Zone from Marvel Comics‘ roster. There are also two prequels to the X-Men trilogy in the works: X-Men Origins: Wolverine, featuring Wolverine, is currently shooting and is scheduled for a May 1, 2009 release, while a a film about Magneto, tentatively titled simply Magneto, is currently scripting. Upcoming sequels include The Dark Knight, scheduled for American release on July 18, 2008, and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, scheduled for a July 11, 2008 release. A possible Superman Returns sequel is currently in pre-production stages.

New franchises include the eponymous adaptations of The Spirit and Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is to be produced by Joel Silver as well as new adaptations of The Phantom, The Shadow and Mandrake the Magician. Meanwhile, the classic Japanese superhero franchise Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, perhaps best known to Western audiences for the edited Battle of the Planets series, is in production for an animated feature film adaptation. The Will Smith vehicle Hancock, featuring an original superhero character, is slated for a July 2, 2008 release.

Numerous other relatively obscure properties such as the Doom Patrol are also undergoing adaptation. There have been rumors of film adaptations of characters such as Iron Fist (said to star Ray Park) and Deadpool (in which David S. Goyer and, according to Goyer, Christopher Nolan are interested), although they have not been confirmed.

So boys and girls, there is one packed action-filled summer and year ahead to look forward to! Enjoy!

Mehreen Jabbar’s Ramchand Pakistani

An enthusiastic applause followed soon after Mehreen Jabbar’s ‘Ramchand Pakistani’ ended in a in a packed downtown cinema in New York last night!

The movie had recently been nominated for the competition section of the Tribeca Film Festival 2008, New York.

The film portrays the story of a family torn apart as a father follows his son who had accidentally strayed across the border into India, and both get captured by the Indian authorities. Nandita Das from the acclaimed hits of the 1990s like Fire (1996) and Earth (1998) plays the Pakistani mother stuggling for their freedom, and mourning their long absence. This story is said to be based on true events.

The film features many prominent Pakistani actors such as Rashid Farooqi, Noman Ijaz, Maria Wasti, Shahood Alvi, Tipu, Adarsh Ayaz, Saleem Mairaj, and of course the our little star, Syed Fazal Hussain who plays Ramchand.

Ramchand Pakistani might not invoke the same level of thought-provocation and enthusiasm as last year’s ‘Khuda Ke Liye’ did but it is set to lay bare a lot about the fact that several innocent people are detained by either of the two countries and tagged as ‘spies’. Watch out for this one!

Disney’s Nightmare!

Disney is in a fix! It’s a debate however whether a 15 year old is to be called a girl or a child and whether the controversially suggestive photographs of one of their supposedly ‘wholesome’ young stars in the recent issue of Vanity Fair actually amount to child pornography or are they as ‘artsy‘ as the starlet, Miley Cyrus, claims them to be, or at least that is what she said earlier before the storm started brewing.

I am not going to post any of the images under scrutiny here (you can see them in the ‘Related Links’ below) but I would like to say that in my opinion, she does not look like a child. I see a young woman and that too in a country where she is bordering on the legal age anyways. Also I don’t find her ‘topless’ as many suggest her to be. She is wrapped in a bedsheet and looks very similar to a backless gown. What is actually troubling is perhaps not the images but the fact that her fan following majority includes young kids.

Famous US entertainment program, Entertainment Tonight had actually reported on April 25 about this photoshoot. The photo, and subsequently released behind-the-scenes photos, show Cyrus without a top, her bare back exposed but her front covered with a bedsheet. The photo shoot was taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz.

The NY Times jumped in and put up a story about her coupled with the full photograph. Parents across the United States were outraged at such irresponsible behavior from some one their kids adore and love to watch.

The very same day, Miley comes our with an apology that states:

I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.

The following day on April 28, Vanity Fair responded by publishing their full interview and photo shoot with Cyrus and her father Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as the behind-the-scenes photographs, on their website. According to the interview, Cyrus’ parents and/or minders were present during the entire duration of the photo shoot. The idea to pose topless was Annie Liebovitz’s suggestion. When asked if she were “anxious” about the pose, Cyrus stated to interviewer Bruce Handy:

No, I mean I had a big blanket on. And I thought, This looks pretty, and really natural. I think it’s really artsy. It wasn’t in a skanky way.… And you can’t say no to Annie. She’s so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you’re like, O.K.
