Ramchand Pakistani premiers August 1

Ramchand Pakistani

Mehreen Jabbar’s much awaited ‘Ramchand Pakistani‘ will makes its debut simultaneously in Pakistani and Indian cinemas on August 1. This will be, so far, only the second time that a movie will be released in the two countries on the same date. The first one ever to attain this was Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal back in November last year.

The film portrays the story of a family torn apart as a father follows his son who had accidentally strayed across the border into India, and both get captured by the Indian authorities. Nandita Das from the acclaimed hits of the 1990s like Fire (1996) and Earth (1998 ) plays the Pakistani mother struggling for their freedom, and mourning their long absence. This story is said to be based on true events.

The film features many prominent Pakistani actors such as Rashid Farooqi, Noman Ijaz, Maria Wasti, Shahood Alvi, Tipu, Adarsh Ayaz, Saleem Mairaj, and of course the our little star, Syed Fazal Hussain who plays Ramchand.

Gohar and Amrita: Fact or Gossip

“Gohar and Amrita? Hold on! I swear it was Farhan and Amrita just a month back!”

That is what my cousin had to say at a sleep over at my place while we shared the latest gossip. Honestly there is no end to this rumor and confusion!

Who is Amrita Rao with? Gohar, Farhan, both, or neither?

The Times of India published this article slating Gohar Mumtaz of the famous Pakistan pop band Jal to be the love struck bunny proclaiming him to be ‘the fan Amrita has found.’ Or is it more than that? A close friend of Amrita adds more to the massala by saying:

Well, Gohar does like Amrita and has admitted that he’s a huge fan, but Amrita was not even aware of his feelings for her.

Ahem Ahem! Are we to deduce that there actually was or is something bubbling under the surface? One sided crush or something on those lines maybe?

And what about poor Farhan and the feelings we all heard he had for the Indian model/actress? Farhan’s wikipedia page actually answers this as follows:

People are saying Farhan is currently dating Bollywood actress Amrita Rao But actually Amrita is dating with Gohar Mumtaaz, another member of Jal.

Now would our dearest Wikipedia lie to you?

The answer: MAYBE!

Because on the very same page is said that “that despite all rumours concerned with Amrita Rao and Jal guys Farhaan & Mumtaz, the real love of Amrita is Pratik Shah who is from Ahmedabad and he is a Computer Engineer.”

Confusion Confusion!!!

Side Note:

Irregardless of the controversy involving the three, Farhan and Gohar were recently spotted last weekend at Coffee, Tea, and Company (CTC) in Lahore having burgers at 1 in the morning. It’s good to see that there is no love lost between the two over the rumor. Keep up the good work guys!

Shoaib Akhtar and controversies go hand in hand I swear. It’s like this man was born to be the centre of attention; for all the wrong reasons!

Pakistan’s daily, The Nation, posted a story a few days ago regarding airport customs officials finding empty syringes in his luggage while he was travelling to India to play in the Indian Premier League.

Shoaib’s personal doctor and trainer, Dr. Tauseef Razzak dismissed the claims as rubbish!

Talk about Shoaib telling the Customs officials that he needed the syringes to inject insulin as he is a diabetic patient is not true. He has asthma problems and uses an inhaler, for which he has got permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC)

We don’t know if all this is true or just plain old ploy being sponsored by the disgruntled PCB when they got kicked in the face and had to allow Shoaib to play in the IPL. Or maybe it’s the newspaper merely ‘creating’ a sensational gossip because they didn’t have a ‘real’ story about the speedster to publish.

I say leave the guy alone. He’s doing well and entertaining the crowds out there. Give him breathing space and let him do what he does best.

WeCite’s Return

After a gap of over 2 weeks, we are back to our random scribblings again. The reason for the suspended services at WeCite Blog was actually a viral infection called Infectious mononucleosis that I was suffering from and was hospitalized for the past week and a half. Do read about it in the link above because it seems to be happening to a lot of people across Pakistan. Have a look at its symptoms to ensure that if you are (God forbid) going through them, you should get a blood test done ASAP and start medication. This can get REALLY nasty I tell ya!

Well anyways, the news is that I’m back and so is Selina (who decided this was an ideal time to take a break herself and work on her PSFD project).

On my way back home yesterday from the hospital, I heard the unfortunate news of the M2 Pile up involving 30 vehicles and which accounted for the loss of 6 precious lives. Such a tragedy…! May their souls rest in peace and may all who were injured (reported to be oer 50) have a speedy recovery (Amen).

Across the border tragedy struck as well as India’s tourist city of Jaipur witnessed the death of over 80 with approx 150 injured in 7 multiple bombings. Investigations are still underway and it is thought that bomb-laden bicylces had been detonated for this purpose. However, it is yet to be determined whether any suicide bombers were involved in this horrific act or not. Nevertheless, our prayers go out to the dearly departed and all the families affected. Terrorism, no matter in what form or manner it takes place is a plague on the society and those who use it to their advantage to spread anarchy and chaos belong to no religion or country whatsoever.

Over at our circus of politics and its politicians, not much has changed. Why am I not surprised. Nawaz is still trying his best to get the judges restored as that is the major whim on which his party got their votes. Zardari and his PPP are in no hurry to make the restoration effective. Rightly so. Zardari recently got his cases excused from the courts and the books. The last thing he needs is for old books to be opened up by the very judges he restores. He’ll take his chances with the back lash of the judges against PPP but let’s not forget that PPP is not as weak as Musharraf’s regime. They have weathered many a storms before and will not be easily stirred or pushed around. As a sign of their whining and their oh so passionate loyalty to the lawyers’ cause, PML-N ministers put up their resignation with the Prime Minister recently after talks between PML-N and PPP met a disappointing deadlock in London. Nawaz Sharif and co already seem to be stepping away from the so called coalition government while citing that the judges issue can not be put in the back drop.

*sigh* and who said this was not expected! *chuckles*

Over to our favorite sporting event, at IPL, Shoaib Akhtar mades his (flashy?) debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Brewing up a storm of his own, the controversial Rawalpindi Express was the ‘man of the match’ for guiding Shahrukh Khan’s team to a 23-run victory while they defended a modest total of 133 againt the Delhi Daredevils. Shoaib got a wicket each in his first three overs and ended with a brilliant figure of 3-0-11-4. Shahrukh Khan must be over the moon as he had been pulling all strings to get Shoaib involved in the IPL as soon as possible. With him around and starting off at such an explosive pace, one can expect the competion to only get hotter now!

Mehreen Jabbar’s Ramchand Pakistani

An enthusiastic applause followed soon after Mehreen Jabbar’s ‘Ramchand Pakistani’ ended in a in a packed downtown cinema in New York last night!

The movie had recently been nominated for the competition section of the Tribeca Film Festival 2008, New York.

The film portrays the story of a family torn apart as a father follows his son who had accidentally strayed across the border into India, and both get captured by the Indian authorities. Nandita Das from the acclaimed hits of the 1990s like Fire (1996) and Earth (1998) plays the Pakistani mother stuggling for their freedom, and mourning their long absence.

Ramchand Pakistani might not invoke the same level of thought-provocation and enthusiasm as last year’s ‘Khuda Ke Liye’ did but it is set to lay bare a lot about the fact that several innocent people are detained by either of the two countries and tagged as ‘spies’. Watch out for this one!

‘Umm… I’m Sorry?’

So it has come down to this. The seemingly not-so sensible and hot-headed speedster, Shoaib Akthar, has been advised to try a new angle with respect to his ongoing appeal over a 5-year ban that has been slapped on him by the PCB. He apologised

Adjudged by many is a ‘little too harsh’, Shoaib was banned from all forms of cricket not only within Pakistan but also from representing Pakistan in any tournament any where for 5 years. The reason cited for this severe punishment by the PCB was his consistent breach of the Cricket Board’s code of conduct.

Then, most recently, when he was not granted the central contract like many other high end national players, Shoaib lashed out at the PCB and threatened to take them to court over the ban. The PCB, led by Nasim Ashraf retaliated by saying the board itself will sue the player for 200 million rupees (£2.5 million).

Later on, Shoaib tried another approach be stating to the media that he will be happy to see a decrease in the ban.

That was earlier this month but now it seems like Shoaib knows he has back against the wall. He has already missed out helplessly on the ongoing IPL where he was signed up to play for Shahrukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders. Due to the imposed ban, the sponsors of IPL had no choice but to keep him out.

Maharashtra joins Afridi’s Cause

Up until yesterday, I had the feeling that Afridi was a lone ranger out in India having shouted out loud against the ‘unnecessary’ inclusion cheerleaders in the ongoing Indian Premier League and deeming it ‘distracting’. But not any more.

It seems like the Maharashtra government has indirectly joined the ‘Afridi-cause’ by condemning the ‘vulgar’ acts on display by the cheerleaders with “bulging breasts and gyrating bellies” and have been dubbed as “worse than bar dancers who were making mockery of cricket!”

Actor-turned-politician, Shatrughan Sinha also seemed irked by the presence of cheerleaders and went on to say:

If you are so interested in deploying these girls who dance after hits of fours and sixes, it is better to give chance to the bar girls who have been rendered unemployed after Maharashtra government put a ban on dance in bars!

Indian Social Activist, Swami Agnivesh outrightly rejected the cheerleading concept and said it is degrading Indian culture:

It is the height of vulgarity and it should be stopped. People in the age group of 10 to 70 years come to see matches with their families. In a country like India, the public representation of obscenity will not be tolerated!

It seems like the idea of importing the cheerleader-effect from the United States has had severe implications for the IPL. While there are many including Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shahrukh Khan who believe that there is nothing wrong with bringing this element of entertainment to the world of cricket, the protests against cheerleaders and their routines is growing day by day.

Time will tell how the cookie crumbles.

Shoaib Akhtar – Old Habits Die Hard!

He is a rebel at heart and he loves to party! These are two vital facts about Shoaib Akhtar that seem to have over-shadowed his professional statistics in Cricket in the past couple of years it seems. Amid all the controversies and confrontations he has been involved (or is currently involved) in, he wastes no opportunity to do what he desires the most: party hard and late in the company of the beautiful. In Kolkata, he did just that, yet again!

According to mid-day news website, the Pakistan team management is extremely upset over his recent romps at a discotheque which actually happens to be the third time he has been caught partying out when he shouldn’t be. Team manager Talat Ali has every reason to be frowning at Shoaib Akhter. His late night partying habits are getting a bit out of hand and some thing needs to be done about it soon. Last time I checked, we needed professionals not celebrities to play for our country. I am assuming and silently praying that PCB realises this and do take care of our very own party boy.

My personal prediction: May be Shoaib is happy about finally getting a role in Bollywood that he was talking about during the second test. He wanted to ‘express’ and ‘celebrate’ his upcoming success and therefore did what he does better than bowling. Maybe it is about time he has a career change.

Ah well, cest la vie!

Om Puri to play Gen Zia-ul-Haq in ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’

Veteran Bollywood actor, Om Puri, will be seen getting in to the skin of the character of General Zia-ul Haq, the late Pakistan President, in the upcoming international venture Charlie Wilson’s War that also stars Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks.

It will be interesting to see how Om Puri will fair as the late General who died in a mysterious airline accident when his plan blew up in mid air back in August 1988.

Charlie Wilson’s War is a 2007 drama film about Democratic Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson, who conspired with a rogue CIA operative named Gust Avrakotos to launch an operation to help the Afghan Mujahideen during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It is based on a 2003 book of the same title by George Crile. The film is directed by Mike Nichols, is written by Aaron Sorkin.

The release date for the movie is December 21, 2007 and has been shot in Morocco.

Shoaib Akhtar in Bollywood?

I have been hearing about Australian pacer Bret Lee and his upcoming Bollywood debut everyone’s been buzzing about and it always made me wonder why no one ever offered our boys any roles?

Well guess what boys and girls! Our very own Paris Hilton, oops I meant Speedster, Shoaib Akhtar might be making HIS debut in Bollywood real soon!

“I have a piece of news for you. I have got an offer from Bollywood and will decide whether to work with them once I listen to the script,”, is what Akhtar said to India Times on Sunday.

He said the producer and director would meet him with the script during the December 8-12 third Test against India in Bangalore. No idea as to who this producer and director are as of now.

I somehow just can not imagine Akhtar acting. I mean, he’s a good bowler but will he fair as well in Bollywood is doubtful. For now I only hope this does not derail our Rawalpindi Express from what he is REALLY suppose to do; play for his country! He is known to get distracted quite easily by girls, night clubs, drinks, and what not.

But Shoaib Akhter in Bollywood? Someone please pinch me NOW!

WeCite Review: Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal

Ok, I got a chance to see this movie last night with a couple of my girlfriends over jumbo popcorn and lots of diet coke. To give you the briefest overview possible, if you leave aside the football in the movie, the message shown is that seemingly the whities despise the brownies and so the brownies have this huge ego point to prove that they are high and mighty and can rise above the hatred to win a championship! As true as the claim might be that yes, there is racism around, whites and browns and blacks and what not actually do mix together more than they racially abuse each other. So while the movie is a treat and John looks ‘oh so yummy’, using racial issues is like adding fuel to fire I fear. Let’s hope our whities don’t take offense. After all, it’s only a movie, right?

From the word go, I got the feeling that there were a few too many characters jammed in together to give the movie its Pakistan/India/Bangladesh mix. Way too many characters! You can not help but feel sorry for the little Bengali who’s character not only feels neglected but also gets the slaps and cries the most (twice, if I am not mistaken!). There was little surprise about the storyline or how it would evolve as the teasers had already said it all. But then again, it’s a rarity to see a sports movie end without a ‘happy and victorious’ ending for the underdogs who come out of no where to clench a title! Bolly or Holly, it’s the same massala.
