The Gloves Come Off!

I’m not convinced we are winning it in Afghanistan. I am convinced we can… We are looking at a new, more comprehensive strategy for the region that would cover both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. In my view, these two nations are inextricably linked in a common insurgency that crosses the border between them!

Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, USA

And so it has begun: the open, and unabashed attack on the sovereignty and freedom of Pakistan. The U.S. military, faced with rising insurgent violence in Afghanistan, will revise its strategy for the region to include militant safe havens in neighboring Pakistan. Within a span of 12 days, there have been 7 attacks launched by the United States from across the border on villages in Pakistan. The cup ran over when on September 3, the American Special Operation Forces conducted a full fledged raid inside Pakistan that resulted in the deaths of some 20-30 innocent Pakistanis. The attack for condemned by Pakistan, resolutions were passed in the United Nations but as always, United States paid no heed. Instead, they openly proclaimed the raid as their show and promised further operations on Pakistani soil. According to the NY TIMES, the authorization for this has come right from top: Bush himself! It was back in July when President Bush secretly approved ground assaults inside Pakistan. According to the orders issued, Pakistan is to ‘notified’ when limited ground assaults are conducted inside the country but a permission will not be asked for!

Let’s reconfirm for our understanding… The United States Armed Forces will now cross, jump, fly, or walk over the border to shoot, bomb, kill, take captive, and/or investigate nationals of one of their most important allies in the war against terrorism WITHOUT seeking the country’s approval?

You got that right!

And The Deal Is Done!

The much talked about, fought about, hyped about, and mocked about deal between Islamabad and the Taliban fighters in Pakistan’s north has finally been sealed. At least that is what we are being told this morning to say the least.

There are sketchy and murky details trickling in as to what exactly were the terms agreed upon by both sides. It really doesn’t matter though because it was evident from day 1 whom this deal benefits the most. But let’s not get in to that debate yet again.

It is said that is deal enjoys the backing of Baitullah Mehsud, the head of umbrella Taliban movement in Pakistan.

In shambles is what this deal will be if the Taliban do not stop using ongoing incidents of attacks on them from unidentified sources or from US across the border to thwart this peace initiative. Already, a bomb explosion in Pakistan’s tribal area bordering with Afghanistan killed six Taliban leaders this morning. are they going to pin this on Pakistan Army yet again and reply with another suicidal wave? That would surely shatter this so called deal quicker that you can say ‘whoa’!

While several nations from around the world have expressed their approval over the deal, Washington has remained speculative as always. They recently blocked the sale of APCs to the Pakistan Army and lately, they have imposed financial sanctions on four Lashkar-e-Taiba leaders, a Pakistani based extremist group.

So will this deal last?

Will the Taliban prance on the streets WITHOUT brandishing their rocket launchers and AK-47s according to the deal?

Will the unspecified number of militants and Taliban leaders released by the Pakistani government give up their antics and  ‘retire in peace’?

Will the continuous attacks on Pakistan Armed forces REALLY halt?

Will the bombings by United States predator drones have an impact on the deal?

Time will tell.

Heavy rains take lives of 10

Heavy rains killed at least 10 people in Pakistan’s northwest, including six children who died when part of their mud house collapsed.

The rain has been pouring in the Swat valley area since Saturday evening.

Police officer Siraj Khan says officials recovered the bodies of six children ages 5 to 16 on Sunday from the remains of their crumbled mud house in the Madain area.

He also says two people in a car died when it skidded into gushing stream in Ghalegi area.

Another police officer, Muhammad Usman, says two shepherds died and two others were injured when lightning hit Sakhra forest near Matta.

The Swat valley was once a tourist destination that has recently been the site of extremism and intense militant activity.

US blocks sale of armoured personnel carriers to Pakistan

The first sign of retaliation and disagreement has come from Washington over the peace agreement between Islamabad and the Taliban in Swat.

United States has barred a German firm from selling 800 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to the Pakistan Army. It has to be noted that this order had previously been approved.

The move is an evident sign of induced pressure on the Pakistan Army to not accept the peace deal as it would go against the interests of Washington who are engaged in warfare with Taliban and Al Qaeda in Iraq as well as Afghanistan. Their stance is that there can not be peace on one front and war on the other with the same enemy.

Something tells me this is just the tip of the ice berg!

Lord, what fool these mortals be!

Ok, I am going to try to be as blunt and straight-forward as possible without deviating from the issue at hand (NOTE: I said I’ll try!).

This ‘one sided’ peace agreement with the Taliban holed up in Pakistan’s North is NOT GOING TO WORK!

Unless Islamabad has a few tricks up their sleeves and are earnestly at work in using these peace talks as a blanket to something more productive and effective to dislodge the leech called extremism from Pakistan, this is a sheer waste of time and resources!  I have repeatedly said that this is majorly a one sided deal with evidently only one party reaping the benefits… and it ain’t us! When is our government going to realize that?

UNDERSTAND THIS!

DEMOCRACY DON'T RULE THE WORLD, YOU'D BETTER GET THAT IN YOUR HEAD; THIS WORLD IS RULED BY VIOLENCE, BUT I GUESS THAT'S BETTER LEFT UNSAID - Bob Dylan: American folksinger.
