Pakistan’s airline worst for noise

Planes operated by Pakistan International Airlines broke noise limits at Manchester Airport more than those of any other company last year – for the second year running.

The firm broke the limit 20 times and was fined £13,300. One of the breaches happened at night, new figures show. It was fined £24,500 in 2005 after it broke the limits 34 times. A total of 13 companies were fined for noise breaches last year. The second worst offender was Sweden’s Viking Airlines, fined £9,750 after breaking the limits 15 times. Excel Airways was third and was fined £8,000 for 13 breaches.

Manchester Airport is committed to keeping overall daytime noise down despite an increase in aircraft movements. It says night noise has gone down considerably since 1992 – mainly because airlines have replaced older aircraft with newer ones. The airport has monitored aircraft using the Manchester Airport Noise and Track Information System for 20 years.

Restrictions

Tighter restrictions were proposed on noisier aircraft, including increased fines, plus a total ban on the loudest, when a new night noise policy was put out for consultation last year.

At the time, spokesman Tim Walmsley said that the airport’s draft Masterplan to 2030 emphasised a need to balance the economic benefits of growth with the need to minimise the impact of operations on its neighbours.

Pakistan International Airlines was banned from using 30 of its planes on flights to the European Union earlier this year.

The announcement by the European Commission followed a series of inspections of the airline’s operations and maintenance procedures in Pakistan,

Manchester Airport is PIA’s biggest base outside its home country.

The airline was criticised a year ago after an investigation into five separate fires on jets landing at Manchester.

DEMOCRACY DON'T RULE THE WORLD, YOU'D BETTER GET THAT IN YOUR HEAD; THIS WORLD IS RULED BY VIOLENCE, BUT I GUESS THAT'S BETTER LEFT UNSAID - Bob Dylan: American folksinger.
