‘Bob Woolmer might have been murdered!’ – Jamaican Police

“Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer’s death at the World Cup on Sunday is now being treated as “suspicious” by Jamaican police. We have reasons to believe that he might have been murdered but it is not confirmed as yet.” Deputy Commissioner Mark Shields.

“Having met the pathologist, medical personnel and other investigators, there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer which we are now treating as suspicious,” Shields said. “We have already informed the Woolmer family of this development and we are also in close contact with the Pakistan team management, Cricket World Cup and the ICC (International Cricket Council) to ensure that all the parties are kept informed of the ongoing investigation.”

Pakistan team spokesman Pervez Mir said that they were considering whether to play their final World Cup match against Zimbabwe in Kingston on Wednesday. “This is something to be readdressed. We will be discussing it with the players, the team and the ICC,” he said.

Blood on the floor

Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room on Sunday less than 24 hours after their World Cup defeat by Ireland and pronounced dead in hospital later that day.

Reports from the Pakistan camp at the time said that Woolmer was discovered by hotel staff on the floor of his room with his mouth wide open, blood was discovered on the bathroom floor, there was vomit on the walls and signs of diarrhoea.

Death Threats

It has also been revealed lately that Bob Woolmer was getting death-threats from fans back in Pakistan after the team lost the match to Ireland and were knocked out of the world cup.

“The Major Investigation Task Force (MIT) has been asked to probe prescription drug and alcohol overdose theory. The Police treating sudden death as a homicide. Woolmer had received death threats from Pakistani fans, we are taking reports of death threats very seriously. The police questioning persons who met with Woolmer before his death.”  – Mark Shields

Match Fixing Issue

Former Pakistani Test cricketer Safraz Narwaz has suggested Woolmer may have been killed to stop him talking about match fixing.

“Woolmer may have been killed by those who wanted to silence him on the issue of match fixing, “ Narwaz said.

Woolmer was writing a book called “Discovering Cricket” in which he was allegedly going to expose the links between bookmakers and Pakistani cricket.

Pakistan were considered one of the leading contenders to win a title they claimed in 1992, but the shock defeat to Ireland coupled with an opening-day defeat by hosts West Indies doomed them to an early exit. The elimination was greeted with fury by fans back home in the cricket-crazy nation who burned effigies of the players.
