Australia rip apart Netherlands, England outplays Canada

Defending champions Australia completed a crushing 229-win over the Netherlands in their World Cup Group A match on Sunday to record the third-largest winning margin in the tournament’s history.Brad Hodge, batting at number five in place of the injured Andrew Symonds, pressed his case for a place in the first choice Australia side with his maiden one-day century.

Hodge, who was twice not out in the 90s against New Zealand this year, started quietly but then accelerated to reach 123 from 89 balls with eight fours and seven sixes against a modest attack of medium-pacers.

He shared a World Cup record fourth wicket partnership of 204 with Michael Clarke, who finished on 93 from 85 balls and struck six fours and three sixes, including a lofted straight drive on to the pavilion roof in the final over.

Australia 358/5 (50 ov) / Netherlands 129 (26.5 ov)

Australia won by 229 runs. 

England eased to a 51-run win over minnows Canada while trying to make light of Andrew Flintoff’s absence in their World Cup Group C match on Sunday.

England made 279 for six after being sent in but, despite reducing Canada to 65 for four, were unable to bowl out the minnows without their pace-bowling all-rounder.

They were held up first by a fifth-wicket stand of 96 between Abdool Samad (36) and Ashif Mulla (60), who hit all-rounder Paul Collingwood for a six over the roof of the stand at deep mid-wicket.

England 279/6 (50 ov) / Canada 228/7 (50 ov)

England won by 51 runs.

Today, Bermuda goes against India (Group B) at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and West Indies take on Zimbabwe at Sabina Park, Jamaica
