I AM NOT GOING TO RESIGN!

Struggling through a crush of supporters at the Supreme Court, Pakistan’s chief justice yesterday rejected allegations that he abused his authority, as closed-door proceedings began to decide if the country’s leader was right to remove him.

he judge was swarmed by hundreds of lawyers demonstrating on his behalf as he made his way to the first hearing on his case at the court. The demonstrators scuffled with police, and climbed onto the judge’s car, breaking its windshield. “They are absolutely useless allegations,” Chaudhry said as he entered the white marble building, his black tie tugged askew and his shirt collar crumpled from the crush of demonstrators, police and opposition leaders, who had also come in a show of solidarity. Asked if he was under pressure to quit, he said,

“I am not going to resign.”

According to a summary of his remarks in the hearing released by his lawyers, Chaudhry accused Musharraf of breaching the constitution and the judicial council of overreaching its powers. He said he and his family were prisoners in their home and that security forces seized his car keys, cut off his phones and cable television connection and kept visitors waiting outside.

DEMOCRACY DON'T RULE THE WORLD, YOU'D BETTER GET THAT IN YOUR HEAD; THIS WORLD IS RULED BY VIOLENCE, BUT I GUESS THAT'S BETTER LEFT UNSAID - Bob Dylan: American folksinger.
