Help for Indonesian jet crash probe

Australia has offered to help Indonesia investigate the crash-landing of a jetliner which burst into flames, killing 23 and injuring scores more, at Yogyakarta airport in central Java on Wednesday.

John Howard, Australia’s prime minister, said Indonesia will accept the offer based on the close relationship forged after the Bali bombings in 2002.

“Out of the tragedy of the first Bali attack in 2002 a very close bond formed between the Australian Federal Police and the Indonesian police… we have a very trusting relationship,” Howard on Thursday.

Australian police forensics experts could be in Yogyakarta for some time, he added.

Howard said the close relationship meant “that offers of assistance can be considered and taken without any sense that it reflects poorly on the Indonesian capacity”.
