Naming everything Bhutto

Read this Daily Times news. Aren’t our leaders getting a tad bit carried away with BB’s 55th Birth Anniversary? What will be next? Renaming Islamic republic of Pakistan to Bhutto Republic of Pakistan?

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday announced that Islamabad airport, Rawalpindi General Hospital (RGH) and Murree Road would be named after former Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairwoman. Islamabad International Airport will now be called Benazir Bhutto International Airport, the RGH Benazir Bhutto Hospital and Murree Road Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Road, said a statement issued by the prime minister’s secretariat

Standing Against The Tide - Samad Khurram

What is so special about a bright and young Pakistani student, studying at Harvard, coming in front of a large audience being covered by the national and international media and declare that he will not receive an award from a US ambassador as a sign of protest over the recent unprovoked attack against our Armed Forces inside Pakistan?

EVERYTHING!

Because what Samad has done is something that our politicians don’t have the guts to do in a million years! He stood strong and determined and in his own way snubbed the representative of the United States, calling their recent attack on Pakistani soil as that of a coward.

Bravo Samad! You have made us all proud. While our filthy politicians were too busy taking out long marches and seducing the masses with their political charms and speeches, you have paid homage to those who lost their precious lives by giving a resounding slap to the United States. You are the kind of people we need to lead us on… NOT the Zardaris or Musharrafs or Sharifs or Aitezazs or Iftikhars!

And such a pity that our so called free media conveniently forgot to highlight this story with the acknowledgement it rightly deserved! Nothing new on that front really. Dogs rarely bite the hand that feeds them you see *chuckles*

Please take a minute of your time to send an email to Samad at samadkhurram@gmail.com and congratulate him for his stance!

Thank you Samad. You have made us all proud!

UPDATE [21 June, 2008] One of our regular readers, lestat, was kind enough to provide us with a youtube link of the ceremony. Here’s presenting Samad Khurram’s much talked about stance…

PLEASE NOTE - This particular post on WeCite Blog concerns and deals only with Mr. Khurram’s stance on the recent attacks on Pakistani soldiers and bears no relation to his personal views and opinions on the current state of Pakistani affairs outside the scope of this incident. Readers are requested to keep this in mind and not confuse the two.

Pakistan: Running out of leaders and Diesel…

That we are running low on a true and honest leadership four our country is an old joke with the world. So no point hogging that subject. Have a laugh as you watch our media, our leaders and those who think they are leaders haggle for monopoly and move on to the next show.

Also running critically low is Diesel in Pakistan. Supplies across Pakistan have begun drying up, largely due to a squeeze caused by a payments crisis, and some 15 per cent of outlets in the country have stopped selling the fuel.

The worst affected is the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) - but in this case the crisis has been caused by the smuggling of diesel into Afghanistan, where its price is much higher than in Pakistan.

So you think it is time to trade in your toyota corollas for factory fitted CNG cars yet?

Miss Headscarf 2008? You have to be kidding!

The Danes are getting really desperate. I think they are beginning to realize the sheer impact of the hatred they have fueled against themselves from Muslims all over the world! A week ago there was a suicide bomb blast at their embassy in Pakistan’s capital city of Islamabad by Al-Qaeda. If this gave them a wake-up call, they came up with a really odd plan to cool off some of the anger.

Miss Headscarf?

I never knew such a thing even existed!

Judges picked 18-year-old, Iraqi-born, Huda Falah from photographs of 46 contestants in an Internet-based pageant organized by Denmark’ public broadcaster DR1’s teenage show. Falah was chosen because the light blue Islamic headscarf was “a fantastic and shocking colour!”

First prize in the contest included an iPod, a headscarf designed by a Danish fashion boutique and a one-year subscription to the English-language Muslim Girl Magazine.

Make up your mind Denmark! Are you done ridiculing Islam or are you only trying to be a wolf in a sheep’s clothing!

ENOUGH OF THIS HUMAN TRADE!

I am extremely pissed-off after reading this article published in The Guardian by Declan Walsh today!

You would be too… at the insensitivity… the height of illiteracy… at such preposterous traditions that, for centuries, have marred the lives of so many… women and young girls in particular!

When will we evolve and shed off these inhuman, man-made laws that give no importance to the lives and the will of a person? Where innocence is lost by sheer brutality in a tit-for-tat settlement. Women are being raped, exchanged, enslaved, killed for the sake of resolving decades old tribal feuds whose history and origin are as ridiculous as their eventual means of resolve! Young girls … ages ranging from barely months to around 15 years are flung from one side to the other as if their value is nothing more than that of a barter trade comodity.

Why has humanity died in these people and why is there nothing being done to stop this?

The article in reference (above) gives a startling account of the very same practice that happened recently in Balochistan… where 15 child brides aged 3 to 10 were ‘handed over’ for marriage to end a bloody feud whose history was summarized as:

A dog owned by one tribe, the Chakranis, was shot dead because it strayed too close to a well controlled by their rivals, the Qalandaris. In revenge the Chakranis shot a donkey belonging to the other side. A ferocious bout of tit-for-tat killings ensued in which 19 people, including five women, were killed…

The eventual solution: Blood money and 15 women given for marriage!

Correct me if I am wrong… but isn’t it WRONG to declare a 3 YEAR OLD CHILD a WOMAN?

Did any one even bother to ask the helpless mothers whose younglings you were snatching away and ‘using’ as a bargain? I am sure it never happened because it NEVER happens! Women are never treated with respect and regard where such a horrific trade is at large. Because it is an exclusively ‘MAN-made’ parallel-law; a law that has no logic and doesn’t give due acknowledgement to free will and personal freedom.

No one in these rural areas cares about the writ of the government. That has always been the case. Governments have come, promised action, issued orders and yet there has never been a substantial decline in these practices. It is the law of the jungle there. That is why this practice of exchanging women for marriage called Vanni, although declared illegal in Pakistan, is still thriving!

THESE MEDIEVAL AND BARBARIC TRADITIONS MUST STOP!

THE GOVT MUST TAKE STERN ACTION AGAINT THE PERPETRATORS OF THESE CRIMES!

WOMEN MUST BE PROTECTED AGAINST SUCH PRACTICES!

ENOUGH OF EXCUSES AND COWARDNESS ON THE PART OF OUR GOVERNMENTS AND LEADERS! ENOUGH!

Archiving Pakistan’s Cinema History - A helping hand of a Frenchman

Philippe Jalladeau, a French researcher of cinematography has been awe-struck after watching Shoaib Mansoor’s ‘Khuda Kay Liye’ thrice.

The researcher, on a mission to promote and archive films from across the globe, has already proved to be a very useful element for Pakistan’s cinema revival. He has helped promote “Jago Hua Savera“, a 1958 classic that won Pakistan a prize at the Moscow Film Festival.

Not only does Jalladeau plan to produce copies of this epic movie but also aims at building a proper archive for the Pakistani cinema

Do you know Pakistan is one of the few countries that doesn’t have a proper archive? Bangladesh has one, even Afghanistan has an archive, so why not Pakistan!

He also intends to lecture Pakistani students on cinema and make a feature film by collaborating with them.

Beware of the ‘Bilawal Mail’!

A hoax email on behalf of slain former Pakistani Premier Benazir Bhutto’s son Bilawal asking people to help him take custody of funds deposited by his late mother in a Dutch bank is currently being circulated, presumably by Internet scamsters. The email, received by numerous people in the United Arab Emirates, promises to keep details of the recipients secret.

It asks recipients to help Bilawal get access to funds allegedly put in the bank in the Netherlands by his mother so that the PPP can push its demand for a probe into Bhutto’s murder by the UN.

“All we just crave for now is for her killing to be probed by an international team under the United Nations. It is the only hope we have of getting the possible plotters of her murder properly investigated,” states the email which even provides a link to the PPP’s official website.

“Only this would help us convince our supporters that there was some element of collusion between her murderers and agents of President Musharraf who were determined to get rid of her.”

Pak Spectator Interviews Fauzan Sohail

The Pakistani Spectator has been doing a marvelous job of bring to light notable bloggers from Pakistan and world over for their contribution to the blogging world. The site has today published an interview given by our very own Fauzan Sohail and highlighted The WeCite Blog.

Team WeCite thanks you for providing us the opportunity to speak out and share our views on your website.

Here are some snippets from it:

What do you think sets Your blog apart from other blogs?

The diversity that WeCite brings to its readers.

We aren’t politics-centric, or entertainment-based, or a sports-mania. We’re all of them. My team and I keep our ears and eyes open for each and every interesting news that comes our way and we make sure ‘We’ either ‘Cite’ it or present it with our own two cents included in the form of OPINIONS. What makes is different is this very ingredient of being randomly specific and giving our readers something new to read every time they visit us. We’re not tight-lipped and neither are we conventional in our content. On occasions we have been blatantly accused of promoting ‘yellow journalism’ because we wrote about something that raised eyebrows. *chuckles*. We don’t care. As long as there is a healthy readership for what we present, we keep on presenting it. That makes us unique in what we do. The blog started as my personal efforts and now I have two dynamic team players along with me: Selina and Sherry (aka Aleena).

Urdu Blogs have got huge potential, when do you think they will really take on the online horizon in Pakistan?

As much as I adore my national language, I don’t think I can see Urdu blogs making an impact online as effective as its english counterparts. There is no single reason for that. English is termed now as a modern universal language that is binding cultures and traditions together in the cyberworld. Urdu readership is not that advanvced or expansive. They may be able to make an impact nationally but International influence is an entirely different ball game.

Is it true that who has a successful blog has an awful lot of time on their hands?

I highly doubt that. Perhaps being a one man army and not knowing what exactly you want from your blog could lead you to spend enormous amounts of time on your blog but if you really know your vision and what you want in what manner from your site, you can schedule updates and posts accordingly. It is not how much time you spend on it but how you utilize your blog in the most efficient manner that counts!

Breaking News: M Asif arrested for possessing drugs!

Breaking News: Pakistani cricket player Mohammad Asif has been arrested in Dubai when banned drugs were found in his possession!

The fast bowler who was playing for Delhi Daredevils in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) was taken in to custody at the Dubai International airport while he was returning to Pakistan from Mumbai via Dubai. He has been charged with contraband!

It has now been learnt that he had large quantities of opium in his possession.

The PCB would brief the media about the situation later on today.

The arrest is just the latest controversy to hit Pakistan’s troubled cricket team over the last two years.

Asif was banned for one year after he tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in October 2006. Fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years on the same charge.

Qari Ziauddin, who teaches Koran to boys in Qari Latif Islamic school, hanged Atif upside down with a ceiling fan in the school after beating him with sticks, which caused his death.

The barbaric act only intensifies in its gory as the teacher did not even bother to take the poor child to the hospital after his condition went from bad to worse.
