Last year in April, the WeCite Blog had put up a news from rediff about Pakistan’s first Sikh Traffic Warden (Gulab Singh) who hails from the holy town of Nankana Sahib. He had joined as a Sub Inspector in Lahore where he became an overnight mini-celebrity on the roads. Speaking to Sunday Times back then he had said:
“The attitude of my fellow trainees and officers was very good towards me. Nobody ever forced me to do anything against my religious beliefs, I never had any problems wearing my kara (bangle), or keeping my kirpan (dagger) with me.”
Now, a year after his inclusion in the forces, this lone ranger has decided to call it quits citing ‘discrimination in his department’ as the prime reason. His religion was made fun of by his colleagues and his seniors never looked in to the matter. His colleagues on the other hand say that Mr. Singh has always had an issue with his attitude and often picked up fights.
Whatever the real story might be, it is sad that Mr. Singh has decided to leave and personally, I don’t think it is he who is at fault. Our dear police doesn’t know how to respect their first class ‘muslim’ citizens, what to talk of some one from the minorities!
